Sword Art Online season 2 ended back in December 2014. Since then, fans have been eagerly waiting for the next season to arrive. However, it now seems that Sword Art Online season 3 might not arrive at all.

The last episode of Sword Art Online season 2 aired on December 25, 2014. Since then, there has been no official word on when the next season of Sword Art Online will arrive. To be honest, we currently even don’t know whether there will be Sword Art Online season 3 or not. Because of this, the majority of fans believed that they won’t be able to enjoy another season of this critically acclaimed anime series. And now, the chances of that to happen have increased.

Fans will be happy, as well as disheartened, to know that Skydance Television recently got the required rights to produce a live-action TV adaptation of Sword Art Online. Why fans will be disheartened? Well, this clearly hints that the studio will be now busy with the live-action TV series, meaning that they won’t have any time to focus on Sword Art Online season 3.

According to Variety, Laeta Kalogridis has been assigned to work on the pilot episode of Sword Art Online live-action TV series. Kalogridis is known for many of her notable works including the 2010 psychological thriller film, Shutter Island, and the 2015 science fiction film, Terminator Genisys. Along with Skydance’s CEO David Ellison, Marcy Ross, and Dana Goldberg, Kalogridis will also be the executive producer of the series. So fans definitely won’t get disappointed by the live-action TV series.

Sword Art Online live-action TV series will revolve around the story of Kazuto Kirigaya, who is a splendid young beta tester. The latter, who will be accompanied by his friends and 10,000 other youngsters, will have to survive in the next-generation virtual reality online role-playing game he’s stuck in. The series will feature a story which will blow the minds of fans away. So the wait will be worth it.

As for now, we currently don’t know when Sword Art Online live-action TV series will start getting aired, but we can pretty much expect them to arrive at the end of this year or at the start of the next.

Sword Art Online is written by Reki Kawahara. The anime series started way back in July 2012. The first season of Sword Art Online featured 25 episodes, which aired in 2012 from July 8 till December 23. The second season, on the other hand, consisted of 24 episodes, which aired in 2014 from July 5 till December 25. Sword Art Online manga was inspired to get an anime adoption by A-1 Pictures, who have done a remarkable job with it.
