Instagram is the most popular photo-sharing app on the Android platform and hit the new milestone of 1 billion downloads. Facebook’s other online services, Messenger, WhatsApp and Facebook itself, has already completed the same landmark.

Instagram first burst onto the scene in 2010, and within three months surpassed the three million mark. The app crossed the 10 million mark by the year end. And now, the app has joined the elite league of few apps that have 1 billion downloads to their name. In fact, it’s just the 19th app in play store to boost this figure. The first app to do so was Google’s own Gmail, which was then followed by Google Maps then YouTube and Facebook.

At first, the app was only available to iOS users. But, the growing popularity of Android made sure that the app launched in 2012 to widest smartphone audience. Now, the app enjoys more than 500 million subscribed users with 300 million daily active users.

“Today, we’re excited to announce our community has grown to more than 500 million Instagrammers — more than 300 million of whom use Instagram every single day,” the company said in a post. “Our community also continues to become even more global, with more than 80 percent living outside of the United States.”

Many new features have added to the Instagram ever since its inception 2010. Now, you can upload videos of up to 60 seconds as opposed to 15 seconds earlier. The latest feature to be added was Stories to counter Snapchat.

It’s a great milestone, and definitely, the one Instagram should be proud of. Although 1 billion downloads don’t mean the active number of users, it will surely help in attracting businesses for marketing campaigns.
